Top 10 things to know before your Newborn Photo Session

As a newborn photographer I get asked so many questions by potential clients about what to expect for their session or how sessions actually work, what they should bring etc etc.

So I thought it would be helpful to make a blog post about the top 10 bits of information to know before you book with Iron Lace Photography :)

1. Age Matters

The best time to get newborn portraits done is a tiny window between 5-14 days after they are born. After that time period the likelihood of them being comfortable and sleepy enough to transition through poses goes down. Of course there are always exceptions to this statement. Babies that are born early and have to stay in the NICU usually do very well at their sessions!

2. When to Book

The best time to book your newborn session is while you are still pregnant. Its best to book a few months before you give birth to ensure that I have availability to fit you into my schedule. I only take a few newborn clients a month, so I don’t always have last minute availability.

3. What Kind of Photos to Expect

I don’t limit anything when it comes to the type of photos I take at each newborn session. I will always offer family and sibling portraits, prop portraits, bean bag poses and macro/detail photography.

4. Accidents Happen

At your session I keep the studio VERY warm, your baby will also be naked in some portraits and well…with a fully belly you can expect there to be accidents. THIS IS NORMAL. I come dressed for accidents and I expect them. They don’t bother me at all, so they shouldn’t bother you either ;)

5. What to Wear

Depending on if you want the studio lifestyle portrait option, or the paper backdrop posed family option, I will provide a guide and style advice for what is best to wear for both of these options so you are well prepared.

8. Session Time

You can expect to spend anywhere from 2-3 hours at your newborn session. Usually Im not posing baby the entire time. We have to stop for baby to eat, clean up, and set changes. This time also includes soothing baby if they are upset or not content.

9. Session Prep Guide

All of my newborn clients get a pre session direction guide when they schedule their newborn session. This guide is made up of tips and tricks I have learned photographing newborns over a 8 year time period. These steps will ensure that you have a happy and sleepy baby for your session and we can achieve all of your favorite poses and set ups!

10. What to Expect After Your Session

So you had your newborn session with Iron Lace Photography. Now what? When your session is over I cull all the best images that I took and start editing. This process usually takes me 7-10 business days (except Saturdays and Sundays). After I am done editing your images you’ll come back into the studio and watch a sweet slideshow of your baby’s portraits as well as live video clips from your session. You’ll pick your favorite images and print products and go home with a USB!
